A heated baritone filled with grit and gravel, Stephen Lynch began singing in his hometown church choir before getting involved in high brow opera and ballet performances. (A brilliant strategy devised he explained, to get closer to girls in tights.)

Originally from northern Ohio, he has tracked a long distance from his Midwestern origins of choral arrangements and tutus and so has his voice; a complex layering of rich textures, his sound is decidedly laid back, whisky filled and sans tights now.

In his early 20’s as a young sailor in the US Navy stationed in Guam, Lynch purchased his first guitar, stating that he just wanted to strum on it awhile to accompany the tunes playing between his ears.  “…Self-taught--I had every intention of selling it before I left, but then, somehow I got this idea to hold on to it.”  It seems he found his fingers wouldn’t let go.

If one were to pin-point his first turn in journeying from those foundational experiences, it would be through the writing of poetry much like the Music Hall of Fame greats.  In the philosophical leanings and influences of Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, and Pure Prairie League, born from the legs of his own written prose, melody and poetry merged to birth a number of diverse musical stylings.  His songs meander comfortably like his restless feet from rock to country, and folk to pop.  Oddly enough, he reports that somewhere along the way his melodies began dictating and his allegiance switched.  He allows the tune to lead when he writes lyrics today.

The most recent and perhaps most profound twisted turn of his interesting life and musical journey though came in 2003.  Working for the Department of Defense in Iraq at the time, he watched in slow motion as a car bomb wrenched through his lodging; a fatal ending nearly missed.  He declares that shortly thereafter he felt compelled with an incredible urgency to finish his songs.  “I had twenty or thirty completed and many more hanging out there.  I realized after that how important it was to record them…I have glass in the back of my skull from the explosion that still pops out from time to time, --little pieces…just to remind me to keep going until it’s finished.”

Coming to the end of his two year project recording at Eclipse Studios, he commented on the facility, “I am extremely pleased…every step of this process has been efficient, professional --and from a guy who is semi-professional, there’s a certain expectation of steps.  What I have experienced here is lock step—Jim has top-notch musicians that I can count on, which for my organized personality, aligns perfectly.”

Lynch expects to release his CD’s in February/March of 2007.
